Allergy Season Air Quality

Spring Guide for Bay Area Homeowners

The Bay Area's year-round growing season means allergies can strike any time. Spring brings the most pollen, but grass, mold, and other allergens are present throughout the year. Your HVAC system can be a powerful ally.

Upgrade to High-MERV Filters

Standard filters don't capture pollen effectively. MERV 11-13 filters trap most pollen and mold spores. MERV 16+ captures even finer particles. Replace more frequently during high-pollen periods.

Consider HEPA Filtration

Whole-house HEPA filtration or portable HEPA purifiers capture 99.97% of particles including pollen, mold, and dust mites. Place portables in bedrooms for relief while sleeping.

Control Humidity

Dust mites thrive above 50% humidity; mold grows above 60%. Keep indoor humidity between 30-50%. A dehumidifier may help in some Bay Area locations.

Keep Windows Closed

As tempting as spring weather is, open windows let pollen inside. Use AC or fans for air circulation instead. Check pollen counts before opening windows.

Regular Duct Cleaning

Ducts accumulate dust, pollen, and other allergens over time. Professional duct cleaning every 3-5 years removes this buildup. More often if you have severe allergies.

UV Germicidal Lights

UV lights installed in your HVAC system kill mold and bacteria that would otherwise grow on coils and circulate through your home.

Allergy Season Air Quality FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our services

MERV 11-13 captures most pollen and provides a good balance of filtration and airflow. MERV 16+ offers better filtration but may restrict airflow in some systems. HEPA (separate purifier or whole-house system) is the gold standard.
Yes - AC filters air and removes humidity that promotes mold and dust mites. Keep windows closed and use AC for circulation. Run the fan on "on" mode for continuous filtration.
Check monthly at minimum. During high-pollen periods, you may need to change every 2-4 weeks. A dirty filter can't effectively capture new particles and restricts airflow.
