Wildfire Season HVAC Guide
Fall Guide for Bay Area Homeowners
Wildfire smoke has become a seasonal reality in the Bay Area. Your HVAC system can be your best defense against hazardous air quality - if you use it correctly. Here's how to breathe easier during fire season.
Upgrade Your Filter
During smoke events, a standard filter isn't enough. Use MERV 13 or higher to capture fine smoke particles. If your system can't handle high-MERV filters, add portable HEPA purifiers.
Run on Recirculate
Set your HVAC to recirculate indoor air rather than bringing in fresh air. Most systems do this by default, but check if you have a fresh air intake.
Keep the House Sealed
Close all windows and doors. Avoid using exhaust fans that pull air out (and smoky air in). Seal obvious gaps with towels if needed.
Add Portable Air Purifiers
HEPA air purifiers provide additional protection. Place in bedrooms and living spaces. Run continuously during smoke events.
Run Your System Continuously
Keep the fan running even without cooling or heating. This continuously filters air through your HVAC system. Use "fan on" mode on your thermostat.
Change Filters Frequently
Smoke clogs filters fast. Check every few days during heavy smoke and replace when dirty. A clogged filter does more harm than good.
