Heat Wave Survival Guide

Summer Guide for Bay Area Homeowners

Bay Area heat waves are becoming more intense and frequent. When temperatures soar into the 100s, your AC works overtime. Here's how to stay cool, protect your equipment, and survive the heat.

Pre-Cool Your Home

Run AC heavily in the morning when it's cooler and electricity is cheaper. Your home will stay cooler longer through the afternoon peak. Set to 76-78°F before heat hits.

Close Blinds and Curtains

Solar heat gain through windows can overwhelm your AC. Close coverings on sun-facing windows, especially in the afternoon. Blackout curtains are most effective.

Don't Overwork Your AC

Setting the thermostat to 65°F won't cool faster - your AC runs at one speed. It just runs longer and may freeze up. Set a realistic temperature and be patient.

Use Fans Strategically

Ceiling fans and portable fans let you feel 4-6°F cooler without lowering the thermostat. Direct airflow where people are, not empty rooms.

Reduce Internal Heat

Avoid using the oven, minimize lighting, and run heat-generating appliances (dishwasher, dryer) in the evening. Every bit of internal heat adds to your AC's burden.

Know Your Limits

If your AC can't keep up during extreme heat, that's normal. Systems are sized for typical conditions, not once-a-year extremes. Focus on keeping bedrooms comfortable for sleep.

Find answers to common questions about our services

AC systems are sized for typical summer conditions (design temperature), not extreme events. When outside temps exceed design conditions, the system runs constantly but may not maintain your set temperature. This is normal, not a malfunction.
No - this allows heat to build up, making it harder to cool later. Keep it running at a reasonable temperature. If concerned about the unit, raise the thermostat a few degrees rather than turning it off.
Call for emergency service - explain the situation. While waiting: close blinds, run fans, minimize heat generation, stay hydrated, and consider a cooling center if anyone is heat-vulnerable.
